The Centre for Migration and Diaspora Studies (CMDS) at SOAS is a global hub for transdisciplinary research and teaching on issues related to migration and diaspora, and their intersection with racial, gendered, and class inequalities and struggles for justice.
Drawing on SOAS’s unique expertise in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East while extending to Europe, the Americas, and the Caribbean, the Centre fosters critical conversations about migration and diaspora in a truly global context.
Our work brings together scholars, students, and practitioners from across disciplines.
Our Mission
The Centre for Migration and Diaspora Studies (CMDS) at SOAS University of London advances research and teaching on borders, migrations, diaspora and development. CMDS brings together researchers from a variety of disciplines and draws on SOAS’ long tradition of regional and transnational research from a decolonizing perspective.
Through rigorous scholarship and engaged collaboration, CMDS generates critical knowledge on migration and diaspora studies, creating a safe space for the development of political interventions that shape public, academic and policy discussions on migration.
Teaching
The teaching of migration at SOAS cuts across departments, disciplines, and perspectives. If you study in any of our UG and PG programmes, you will be able to find several migration-related open access modules.
